Chorley student Nick Smith put his knowledge to the test when he appeared on TV’s University Challenge.
The 21-year-old was chosen to be one of four people in the team for the University of Newcastle.
They faced students from the University of Kent in last Monday’s episode - and Nick and his team proved to be victorious.
Nick, who comes from Withnell, said: “It was quite nerve-wracking and some of my friends said they could tell I was nervous.
“It was fun though and it was really good to meet Jeremy Paxman.”
Nick is studying medicine and had to pass a rigorous selection process to secure his place on the team, as around 200 of his fellow students wanted to take part.
He said: “I have always enjoyed pub quizzes and that trivia kind of thing.
“I saw them advertising it at the university. I wasn’t sure whether to do it but my friend said I should have a go. It was good fun.”
Nick, a former pupil at Holy Cross Catholic High School in Chorley, had the support of his family and his parents went to watch the show being recorded.
The team will appear in the next round of University Challenge, with the episode due to be broadcast in the autumn.
