Motorists crawled into work in some areas, including along the busy Blackburn Road, Great Knowley, towards Harpers Lane, where vehicles were bumper to bumper in the rush hour traffic.

Bus operator Stagecoach reported that its 125 Preston to Bolton service was experiencing delays due to bad weather and apologised to travellers for any inconvenience.

Lancashire Police tweeted: ‘Christmas has come late with snow in Chorley and Blackburn this morning, please check your route before heading out this morning.’
