Cyclist in serious condition after crash with van near Rivington

A cyclist is in a serious condition in hospital after being hit by a van near Rivington.

The man had been riding his adapted electric mountain bike along New Road when he was struck by a Peugeot Boxer van at the junction with Horrobin Lane.

The incident happened at around 5.25pm yesterday (May 12) and led to a number of road closures in the area whilst police investigated.

New Road remained closed for a number of hours from its junction with Babylon Lane to where Roscoe Lowe Brow meets the A6 at Grimeford Village.

Horrobin Lane was also closed across Rivington Reservoir to where its meet Rivington Lane.

The cyclist suffered serious injuries and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital, where he remains this afternoon.

Police said the driver of the van stopped at the scene and no arrests have been made.

A police spokesman said: "Officers in Chorley are now appealing for independent witnesses to assist in their enquiries after a collision between a bicycle and a van.

"The cyclist suffered serious injuries after he entered the junction from Horrobin Lane on his adapted electric mountain bike and collided with a Peugeot boxer van which was travelling along New Road, towards Chorley.

"They would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash cam footage of the van or the bike in the moments prior to the incident."
