M65 closure: Four miles of congestion after serious multi-vehicle crash closes westbound carriageway near Blackburn

A serious collision involving a number of vehicles closed a section of the M65 westbound near Blackburn.

The M65 westbound was closed between junctions 4 (Earcroft) and 3 (Brimmicroft) at approximately 4.30pm on Monday (August 22).

National Highways said this was due to a “serious collision involving a number of vehicles” and all emergency services had been called to the area.

“There is approximately four miles of congestion on the approach to the closure,” a spokesman for National Highways said.

Emergency Services add further details

North West Ambulance Service confirm they did attend the incident.

They were called at 16.5 to reports of 5 cars being involved in a collision, and took a conscious female patient to Royal Blackburn hospital with a head injury.

Meanwhile, Lancashire Fire and Rescue clarified that they did not attend the incident.

Lancashire Police provide an update

This morning, a spokesperson for Lancashire Police said it was a “minor injury collision” and they will not be releasing any further details.

Lancashire Police, North West Ambulance Service and Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for more information about the collision.

Diversion route put in place as motorists urged to plan for delays or delay their journeys

Road users are advised to follow the hollow square diversion symbol on road signs:

  • Exit M65 at J4. At roundabout follow Earcroft Way.
  • At Earcroft way and A666 junction turn right and follow A666 (Bolton Road) northbound.
  • At A666 with A6062 junction turn left and follow A6062 (Livesey Branch Road) westbound.
  • At A6062 and A674 junction, turn left and follow A674 (Moulden Road) westbound.
  • At A674 and A6061 junction, turn left and follow A674 (Finnigton Road) southbound.
  • At A674 with M65 Junction 3 roundabout, re-join M65 J3 westbound.
