The M61 motorway was closed earlier this afternoon following a serious crash.

A caravan being pulled by a car hit the central reservation shortly before 3.20pm today on the north-bound carriageway between junction six at Horwich and eight at Chorley.

It caused the car to flip over and set on fire.

Firefighters, paramedics and police were called to the scene, as well as an air ambulance.

A 79-year-old man was taken to Royal Preston Hospital by air ambulance suffering a head injury.

Two other people were taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment to minor injuries.

Both carriageways were closed for 90 minutes, causing long queues of traffic and delays for motorists.
