An underwater bike ride is bigboost for RNLI
A Scuba diver combined his underwater hobby with his other great passion, cycling for a charity mission with a difference.
Andy Bennett, chairman of the Mid Lancs Sub Aqua, and other members of the club were inspired to take part in an underwater bike ride for the benefit of the Leyland RNLI.
The team dubbed the underwater event held at their training base Eccleston Delph near Chorley ‘Le Tour de Delph’ and raised £500 from their efforts.
An exercise bike was secured three metres underwater, close enough to shore for supporters to cheer the challengers on, who each completed the ride in 15-minute stages.
Spokesman for Mid Lancs SAC Ursula Curwen said: “Bunting and flags flying, the first diver went in at 10am. It was a chilly day with a steady drizzle.
“Not exactly great for spectators but still the hardy souls who did venture out that day put money in the buckets and divers swam by, waving, as they pedalled away underwater.
“By 11, Andy was ready. Lead strapped to the frame of his mountain bike and his buddy/cameraman in tow he set off to cycle round the shallows! He cycled past the exercise bike and emerged, very tired about an hour later.
“He still did his turn on the exercise bike.
“The club really pulled together with some people diving and some selflessly acting as shore cover kitting and de kitting, carrying gear, bringing a warm brew when needed.”
