UPDATE: Man arrested and woman seriously hurt after M6 smash

A woman has been left with serious injuries and a man has been arrested after a crash on the M6.

Police said the smash happened at 4.20am on Sunday, when a Volvo S60 travelling north left the motorway at Junction 28 towards Leyland and lost control on the bend.

The car left the carriageway and hit several trees before coming to rest down the embankment near to the Leyland Hotel.

The front seat passenger, a 22 year old woman from Shevington, was taken to hospital suffering from a possible damaged spine and internal injuries.

Police said the driver, a 28 year old man from Chorley, left the scene and was arrested at his home address some time later on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

He was also arrested on suspicion of cannabis cultivation after a cannabis factory was found at his home address.

The man was on Sunday at the Royal Preston Hospital being treated for a broken shoulder he suffered in the crash.

Sgt Dave Hurst, of the Road Policing Unit, said: “This was a serious incident which has left a young woman with serious and possibly life changing injuries.

“I would appeal to anyone who saw either the incident itself or the manner of driving of the Volvo in the moments before, to contact us.”
