Big green and white circles have landed in the town, with a special hidden meaning. The Post can now reveal they are to mark Derian House’s silver anniversary. The children’s hospice, in Chancery Road, Chorley, has been looking after children with terminal and life limiting conditions for the last 25 years.Susie Poppitt, head of fund-raising, said: “We’re very excited to be celebrating our 25th anniversary in 2018 and we hope that as many of you as possible will share that excitement.“Derian is proud of its long-standing track record as the most efficient children’s charity in the country. With every passing year the cost of runningDerian House increases and this year we need to raise £3.95m to keep our doors open. “We are totally reliant on the generosity and efforts of our many supporters and volunteers. “Without you, Derian House would not exist.“This year we’re hoping that as many of you as possible will embrace our theme of 25 years of care and use the number 25 as a theme for your fund-raising. It could be that a group of 25 people get together to hold an event; an individual could make and sell 25 cakes on behalf of Derian, a company could put together 25 teams to run or walk 25 miles. The possibilities are endless.“We’ve put together some special 25th anniversary fund-raising packs, which hopefully will inspire you to do something in support of our amazing hospice. “We’re calling on schools, brownies and guides, scouts and beavers, mums and dads, local businesses, big corporates – anyone who feels inspired by what we do and wants to help us continue to do it.”

Derian’s fund-raising packs include:Enterprise Challenge, using creative ideas to fund-raise.Or are you a baker? The Brownie Bake Off Challenge is hoping to inspire a few people to make cakes, buns and brownies and hold a tasty sale.Schools can also help to celebrate the anniversary through the Silver Sporting Challenge. How can you incorporate 25 in fund-raising? Maybe do a 25-minute dance-off, or have 25 pupils running a mile, or even have 25 stations during a circuit training session.Scouting and Girl Guiding groups can also participate in the Silver Challenge by coming up with new ways of raising cash using the number 25 as inspiration.Derian has also designed a cardboard money collection box which schools and families can collect from the hospice and start saving loose change. For more information call 01257 271 271.

What is Derian House? The children’s hospice provides respite and palliative care for children with life threatening or limiting illnesses. The care team also offers support to parents and the hospice has gradually introduced additional facilities and levels of care that would help ease the burden on parents, for example, offering them accommodation within the hospice so they could remain close to their children whilst getting a good night’s sleep. There is also specialised support for siblings, grandparents and bereavement, as well as help in funeral arranging.Specialist facilities include the sensory room, messy play room, The Forget Me Not garden, a hydrotherapy pool, chapel, and sunflower suite which is a resting place for a child who has passed away.A new building has been added - Vinten Place - named after its lifelong president Margaret Vinten, which will host complementary therapies for families.
