Torrential rain fell in some areas of Lancashire last night - including Winter Hill and Rivington where scores of fire crews have been battling a moorland fire for two weeks.

It was a welcome boost after a fortnight of firefighting among baked moorland and dry grass.

But firefighters said today that more rain was needed.

Nine fire engines from Lancashire were at the scene today.

A Lancashire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: "It was a welcome sight but we still need a lot more rain.

We have nine fire crews up there again today and road closures are stil in place.

"The operation goes on."

More rain has fallen again today but the forecast for the weekend is fine and dry, with temperatures rising again.

Showers are forecast again next week.

The rain was greeted with joy last night on social media

Rachel Burns said on Twitter: "It is royally HAMMERING it down here in Horwich. I’ve never been so pleased.
