A spokesman said: "The chance of disruption will gradually diminish on Saturday morning as temperatures start to rise, although with wintry showers likely to continue."

Gusts of wind measuring at up to 50mph are expected this afternoon, weather watchers predicted.

The weather should ease tomorrow, although another yellow warning - which means residents should 'be aware' - is in place for Monday.

"A large, vigorous area of low pressure is expected to move eastwards, passing just north of Scotland on Monday," the spokesman added.

"This will bring a swathe of very strong west or southwesterly across much of the UK. At present the greatest wind strengths are expected to cross central and northern parts."
