Aldi plans to open 100 new shops by the end of 2021 - full list of locations so far
Aldi has announced plans to open 100 new stores by the end of next year, with £1.3 billion of investment.
The discount supermarket has said its sales continue to increase, enabling it to create 4,000 more jobs as part of the expansion plan.
1,200 stores by 2025
The 100 additional stores planned for the next 12 months form part of Aldi’s long-term plans to grow its portfolio to 1,200 stores by 2025.
The ambitious plans come as the supermarket reported its sales increased by eight per cent to £12.28 billion in 2019, while pre-tax profits have jumped by 49 per cent to £271.5 million for the year.
Despite a difficult year for retailers amid the pandemic, Aldi has seen its sales continue to grow as demand for groceries remained high.
The supermarket has also committed to keeping its prices “the lowest in the market” as many households face pressure on their finances due to the ongoing health crisis, which has seen many lose their jobs or forced to work on reduced pay.
Competitors, including Tesco and Morrisons, have pushed their prices lower in recent months in an effort to stem the strong growth by Aldi and fellow German budget supermarket, Lidl. However, both Aldi and Lidl have failed to benefit substantially from the increased demand for online orders and home deliveries since the start of the pandemic in the UK.
Expansion on click and collect
As part of its £1.3 billion investment, Aldi has said that it will also be expanded its click and collect trial across the UK.
In early September, the supermarket offered click and collect orders for the first time, with a store in the Midlands. The trial is currently only available for Aldi colleagues, but there are plans to extend the scheme to all customers if it proves to be a success.
As part of the trial, Aldi workers can choose from a full range of grocery items online before visiting their store to collect the goods. All items are then to be brought to their cars by store colleagues, contact-free and in line with social distancing rules.
If successful, the chain said the trial will be “extended to customers and at further stores across the country in the near future.”
Additionally, in May this year, Aldi also announced plans to deliver groceries to homes in the UK for the first time via a partnership with Deliveroo.
