It all meant that Jennings Gym were named best club at the tournament, beating off competition from plenty of more established names.

“Clubs like Repton and Islington have been around for the last hundred years or so,” said Dave.

“They’ve won the award before so for a club like ours from the North West to pop up is a really big achievement.

“We had five kids there and some of the other clubs had 25 or more.

“It’s the end of the season now so they’ll all get a rest but we’ve really finished on a high.”

The fine results in the West Country come hot on the heels of the club having a good showing at the prestigious Lord Lonsdale Box Cup in Penrith.

The Jennings brothers also came within a whisker of celebrating their first national champion with young Haaris Brown losing in the 32.5kg final of the National Schoolboy Championships in Grantham at the end of last month.

On the professional front the gym have one confirmed fight to look forward to with Eccleston’s rising middleweight Mark Jeffers back in action at the Macron Stadium in Bolton on July 27.

The MTK Manchester show, being put together by Preston trainer, manager and promoter Johnney Roye, is headlined by Liverpool heavyweight David Price.

Last time out on May 12 Jeffers, 20, picked up his first career stoppage against Pjotr Filatov at the same venue as he moved to 7-0 as a professional.

It is hoped that the gym’s British cruiserweight champion Matty Askin and Preston’s Commonwealth Games gold medalist Scott Fitzgerald will return to the ring in September.
