Coppice captain eyeing top-six finish
White Coppice captain Tony Moore has said finishing sixth in Division One of the Palace Shield would represent a terrific season.
Coppice’s local derby at Hoghton on Saturday fell victim to the weather, leaving them just above the relegation zone. The team has won two of their first eight games of the season and host fellow strugglers BAC/EE Preston on Saturday.
Opening bat Moore said: “It’s been a tough start to the season but we’re far from downbeat. We’ve played a number of the top teams but we’re one of a number of sides who are effectively battling it out in a mini league in Division One.
“It you look at the top five, only Eccleston are represented by their first team. Garstang, Fulwood and Broughton; Vernon Carus and Longridge, who occupy places two to five, play their second teams in our division as their first teams play in the Premier. If we finish sixth, it would be a terrific achievement. I think the key for us is beating the teams who are around us. We’ve picked up excellent wins at Rufford and Kirkham & Wesham, and I think the likes of Hoghton, Withnell Fold, Kirkham and BAC are going to be around us too.”
The 141-year-old club has recently secured a sponsor deal with Bury-based pension specialist Liberty SIPP, which has seen both the 1st and 2nd XI teams kitted out in new shorts and hoodies.
Moore praised the batting of Kyle Dixon, who has scored 284 runs at an average of 47, but said the team needed to less reliant on him.
He said: “Kyle is a brilliant player, I can’t think of a better player in the league but the rest of the lads need to put their hand up and take some of the pressure off him.”
