Charnock Richard failed to win the Wilf Carr Memorial Trophy for the fourth time in a row after a lack of discipline cost them in their tie against Fulwood Amateurs.

The fixture was held at Mossie Park and in the opening 45 minutes, Charnock were reduced to nine men.

David Burrows was sent off for foul language eight minutes before the interval.

Three minutes later, returning midfielder Mike Fletcher was given his marching orders after a bust up with Fulwood’s Brad Fox.

Despite having nine men, Charnock took the lead three minutes after the hour through Carl Grimshaw.

Charnock looked set for victory, but in the final 10 minutes, a brace of goals from Phil Blackshaw handed Fulwood the victory.

All the early play in the fixture was predominantly in the middle of the park.

Ged Smith struck a free-kick wide of the Charnock goal shortly after the half hour.

The balance of the tie changed eight minutes before the break.

Burrows appeared to rant at the linesman and he was sent off four foul and abusive language.

Fletcher joined Burrows in the changing room minutes later after he shoved Fulwood’s Fox.

The midfielder could count himself unlucky after Fox also raised his hands.

Late in the half, Bates did well to turn away a cross and then Phil Nagy headed wide at the back post.

Charnock changed their formation at the half-time break and Grimshaw was given a lone role up front.

The hosts almost took the lead in the 59th minute, but Grimshaw could only shoot wide from inside the area.

However, he avenged his loss in the 63rd minute.

A long ball was sent forward, as the ‘keeper advanced Grimshaw lobbed the ball over his head into an empty net.

Bates was called upon to make a smart save from Smith but in the final 10 minutes, a cross was whipped in and defender Blackwell bundled the ball over the line.

Three minutes later and the visitors turned the game on its head, Blackwell hammering home a loose ball inside the penalty area.

Charnock almost grabbed an equaliser but Ollie Vaulks’ effort was scrambled off the line.
