Coppull United avenged their early-season loss to rivals Euxton Villa as they ran out 2-0 winners at Blainscough Park in the West Lancashire League Premier Division.

Two goals from Greg Brickell sealed the victory for Coppull and a vital three points towards their assault on the top three.

Delighted Coppull manager Dave Haughton said: “It was a great performance, and having Nathen Fairhurst and Mark Edmeads back from injury made us really solid.

“Our back three of Tony Hartley, Dave Taylor and skipper Lee Gelder were awesome to say the least

“Winning and losing are habits, so to get back to winning ways is obviously what we wanted.

“At the start of the New Year, we are lying fifth in the leauge with two games in hand on third place.

“And I still remain confident that we have a lot to say about who is going to win this year’s title.

“If we carry on performing consistently, then we should be in or around the second or third place which is what we will endeavour to keep our sights on.”

The fixture was one of only two to go ahead in the West Lancashire Premier Division as weather took its toll on most fixtures.

The game at Blainscough Park started sluggishly with both sides failing to gain a strong foothold in the game.

But after 15 minutes, Coppull took the lead through the league’s top goalscorer Brickell who, after a quick free-kick, acrobatically hit an effort towards goal.

Matty Wilson produced an excellent save but the rebound was pounced upon by the prolific Brickell, and he made no mistake second time round by slotting the ball in the back of the net.

Then just after the half-hour mark, Lee Mckenna flew into a tackle with Coppull’s Patrick Yates and the latter came off worse with an injury which looks set to rule him out for the next three

McKenna was shown a straight red card by the referee leaving Euxton fighting an uphill battle.

But into the second half, it was Euxton who created the better of the chances with both Jordan Horner and Byron Andrew just failing to find the back of the net.

As time wore away, it was becoming much harder for Euxton as Nathan Fairhurst and Edmeads excellently kept hold of possession in the middle of midfield.

And in the last minute of the game, Brickell grabbed both his and Coppull’s second of the game.

A pass back to Wilson in the Villa goal took a nasty bounce, and Brickell took advantage poking the ball into the back of the net and securing a vital three points for Haughton’s men.

The win for Coppull sees them sitting fifth in the league table, while for Euxton they slip down to ninth.
