CHORLEY stunned big spenders Forest Green Rovers by dumping them out of the FA Trophy on penalties.

Converted spot kicks from James Dean, Darren Stephenson and Dale Whitham along with three fine shootout saves from Sam Ashton sealed a second round win and a trip to Skrill Premier strugglers Tamworth.

The Magpies started the brighter of the two sides with Dean firing wide of the right hand post before minutes later producing a fine save from goalkeeper Sam Russell.

Forest Green grew into the tie with on loan Stoke City striker James Alabi causing plenty of problems. .

But the Skrill Premier outfit failed to test Ashton throughout the first half.

The home side started the stronger of the two in the second period but it was Chorley who had the first clear cut chance.

Dean broke and squared to Adam Roscoe but the midfielder failed to find the back of net shooting wide.

Alabi and Marcus Kelly then missed chances for Forest Green, before the referee brought the game to a close.

The first half of extra time passed with Forest Green having plenty of possession but again it was Chorley who had the best chance of the half.

An Adam Mather corner found its way to Roscoe at the back post but his effort was superbly blocked on the line by Jared Hodgkiss.

The second half of extra time passed without little trouble and after 210 minutes of football without a goal being scored the game went to penalties.

Josh Hine missed the first spotkick for Chorley but shootout hero Ashton saved well to his right from Matthew Barnes-Homer.

Dean sent Russell the wrong way to make it 1-0 before England C star Norwood missed again Ashton saving well.

Stephenson gave Chorley a two goal advantage before Matty Taylor halved the deficit.

Whitham then gave Chorley a 3-1 lead before substitute Paul Green stepped up only to be denied by the right hand of Ashton whose heroic shootout performance sealed a fine and deserved win for Chorley.
