Former Preston North End loanee and Everton starlet Tom Cannon involved in Republic of Ireland training camp

Former Preston North End striker Tom Cannon could be in line for his first senior international cap after being named in Stephen Kenny’s Republic of Ireland training camp.

Fellow former loanee Troy Parrott is also involved in the senior setup, with the Tottenham Hotspur a regular for his national team. PNE captain Alan Browne misses out on the 22-man training camp due to the knee injury he picked up in the Good Friday win over QPR. Former PNE winger Callum Robinson will also miss out due to injury.

Ireland will host a their training camp in Bristol ahead of two Euro 2024 qualifiers next month with Greece and Gibraltar.

The training camp squad is limited to those players currently in the EFL or playing in the League of Ireland, with Premier League players, overseas players and those in the EFL are that are involved in the play-offs, all unable to attend.

Cannon could make his senior bow after making his U21s debut in March, scoring on his debut. The 20-year-old netted eight times during his stay at Deepdale, from January onwards, in his first loan away from parent club Everton and is one of seven uncapped players in Kenny’s squad.

Bristol City goalkeeper Max O’Leary, Hull City defender Sean McLoughlin, Millwall full-back Danny McNamara and Cannon are among those called up.

Goalkeepers James Talbot and Brian Maher, from Bohemians and Derry City respectively, and Shamrock Rovers winger Neil Farrugia have also been included.

Ireland face Greece on Friday, June 16 in Athens before hosting Gibraltar three days later at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, losing their opening qualifying game 1-0 to France in March.

Ireland boss Kenny said: “The six-week break between the end of the Championship and our qualifier in Greece is something we have to navigate and make sure our preparations are planned well,” Kenny told the Football Association of Ireland.

“This training camp in Bristol for four days is essential before we travel to Turkey on June 5 for nine days ahead of our visit to Athens and we’re looking forward to a good four days training and some sharp sessions.”
