Charnock Richard - 2 - 2 Lostock St Gerard’s
Lostock won 3-1 on penalties
Charnock Richard missed out on a place in the Richardson Cup after suffering penalty shoot-out agony in the semi-final against Lostock St Gerard’s.
Lostock carried the greatest threat in the first 20 minutes, but only really created one chance after 19 minutes, when Paul Eatock came out to block a powerful shot.
There was a blow for Charnock when the influential Damian Dashti had to leave the field with hamstring problems.
Somewhat against the run of play, Charnock took the lead after 24 minutes, when John Sanderson found Carl Grimshaw out on the left and David Prout volleyed his centre into the roof of the net at the near post.
Charnock’s defence was finally breached on 78 minutes. Eatock came out bravely to dive at the attacker’s feet but he was a fraction late, and Lostock were level and the game went into extra time.
In the second period of extra time, Jackson had a shot over the bar and it looked as if the game would go to penalties as the 120-minute mark approached.
With three minutes to go, following another Charnock corner, Jackson launched another diagonal cross into the box.
Matt Carlisle got a head on the ball and although a defender attempted to clear, he only helped the ball into the net.
Charnock then took the ball into the right-hand corner of the pitch to kill the game off in the final minutes, but a free-kick to Lostock that should have been awarded to Charnock set Lostock on attack, and they won two corners.
From the second kick, a header hit the underside of the bar and bounced down, Prout punched the ball out and was sent off. Lostock converted the resulting penalty, and it was down to a shoot-out.
Both Carlisle and Liam Hayton missed the target with their efforts while Lostock St Gerald’s scored with their first two attempts.
Andy Battersby scored with Charnock’s third attempt, and Lostock shot past the post.
When Craig Banks had his penalty saved and Lostock scored their fourth penalty the contest was over Lostock winning 3-1.
