Chorley skipper bagged a goal for Chorley in the shoot-out loss

Chorley’s bid to reach the FA Trophy quarter-finals came to a cruel end after losing 6-5 on penalties against Skrill Premier outfit Tamworth tonight.

Jake Cottrell missed the Magpies eighth penalty and Tamworth midfielder Jordan Keane kept his cool to send The Lamb’s through into the last eight where they will take on Grimsby Town.

Earlier in the game, the visitors leading goal scorer Nick Chadwick gave them the lead before Jake Cottrell hit back in the 26th minute.

Wayne Thomas then restored the Tamworth lead before skipper Andy Teague stepped up in the 92nd minute and poked the ball passed Cameron Belford with his head to send the Magpies fans wild.

Chorley started slowly to the game and the Tamworth pressure told when Adam Roscoe gave the ball away in midfield.

The loose ball was picked up by Andy Haworth who carried the ball to the edge of the area laying of for Chadwick who slotted the ball past the helpless Ashton.

The Magpies then grew into the game playing some expansive football despite the awful conditions.

Then after Lloyd Kerry saw his effort saved by Ashton, Chorley broke with Darren Stephenson threading Hine down the right wing.

Hine carried the ball 45 yards and crossed hard and low into the penalty area with the oncoming Cottrell finishing the move slamming the ball into the back of the net.

The Magpies finished the first half strongly and could have gone in at the break 2-1 up but James Dean could only rattle the crossbar when one-on-one with Belford.

Chorley continued to apply pressure in the opening stages of the second half but soon found themselves behind again just on the hour mark.

Ashton produced an unbelievable double save to deny Chadwick first palming the ball wide from a header then blocking the rebound but Thomas curled a shot into the top corner to make it third time lucky and restore the Tamworth lead.

The Evo-Stik League outfit continued to press and were denied a number of times through last ditch Tamworth defending.

The fourth official then held up four minutes of added time and two minutes later Victory Park erupted.

Dean produced an excellent save from Belford but Teague was quickest to react and he nipped in poking the ball into the back of the net.

Chorley were the stronger of the two sides throughout extra time, with Belford and his back line keeping Tamworth in the game and taking the match to penalties.

After two spot-kicks each the sides were level before Whitham, Justin Richards, Jamie Vermiglio and Andy Haworth all missed to keep the shoot-out at 2-2.

After more successful spot-kicks the shoot-out was tied at 5-5 and Cottrell stepped up only to be denied by the diving Belford who saved well down to his right.

Youngster Keane stepped up hitting the ball into the top right hand corner to send The Lamb’s through and secure a 6-5 shoot-out win.
