Coppice lose in run chase thriller

White Coppice snatched defeat from the jaws of victory against Great Eccleston 2nd XI in the Palace Shield Divison One.

Bowling first, Coppice opened with Phil Jackson and Ross Dixon, as Ross’ brother Wayne was absent.

Jackson made the early breakthrough but Coppice struggled to take wickets as droppeed catches and no balls proved costly in an innings were Great Eccleston posted 239-6.

Jackson was the pick of the bowlers claiming 4-90 off 22, and Tom Bates and Kyle Dixon also chipped in with a wicket each.

The Coppice chase got off to an excellent start as openers Keiran Crompton (75) and Tony Moore (66) posted 149 for the first wicket.

But the tides turned as first Moore then Kyle Dixon (0) and Crompton fell and Coppice found themselves 182-6.

Chris Maguire saw a return to form hitting an unbeaten 44 but he needed six to win off the last ball and only managed two as Coppice suffered a two-run defeat.

n Hoghton suffered a 45-run loss against BAC/EE in the Palace Shield Premier Division.

Bowling first, Andy Taylor was the pick of the bowlers taking three wickets as Will Monks (1-26) and Matt Parkinson (2-28) also chipped in restricting BAC to 156-7 off 45.

Hoghton’s reply never really got going as James Ainscough fell without troubling the scorers.

Darren Eccles hit 22 and Taylor an unbeaten 44 but Hoghton were bowled out for 111.

n Withnell Fold had a day to forget.

Bowling first, Fulwood and Broughton 2nd XI posted a massive 324-6 off 45 overs.

Craig O’Neill, Graham Sharples and Michael Atkinson all took two wickets butall the Fold bowlers struggled to contain the Fulwood batsmen.

Gavin Cooper and Josh Cunliffe fell early in the Fold chase and defiant knocks Atkinson (44) and Alan Grogan (55) added some respectability but Fold still slumped to a 181-run defeat.

n Mawdesley suffered yet another Division One defeat but can take positives in a two-wicket loss to Penwortham.

Mawdesley set a target of 161 as Brian Parr (39) top scored.

In reply Nick Marsden took 3-42 but Penwortham stole the victory in the last over.

n Eccleston now have a 16-point lead at the top of Division Two.

The in form Stuart White took 4-12 as New Longton 2nd XI slumped to 63 all out.

Eccleston eased to a nine-wicket victory as Dave Hewson hit an unbeaten 43, but Whittle are on the heels of Eccleston as they eased past Kirkham and Wesham.

Alex Proctor was the pick of the bowlers taking 4-16 off 10.3 in a fine spell of seam bowling as Kirkham were all out for 106.

Whittle strolled to a four-wicket victory as John Dalton Cowley top scored with 26.
