Tom Smith wants to get back to full fitness

Tom Smith has stepped down as Lancashire CCC skipper to concentrate on regaining his match fitness ahead of next season.

Steven Croft will take on the captain’s role at Old Trafford.

Chorley-all rounder Smith succeeded Glen Chapple as captain of the Red Rose last year but only managed to lead out his team-mates on one occasion after suffering a back injury that prevented him from taking part in any further action that campaign.

Smith said: “It was a great honour to be appointed captain last year but I feel that my main focus for now must be to get myself fit for next season.”

Meanwhile, Preston-born Simon Kerrigan will undergo a period of rest and rehabilitation into the New Year after suffering from a back injury towards the end of last season.

The spinner played in 14 first-class fixtures for the Red Rose last season, taking 41 wickets.
