Game review: Assassins Creed Black Flag

It’s a pirate’s life for Edward Kenway as he roams the seven seas in search of riches with his pals. Ubisoft Montreal have capitalised on the Assassins Creed series that has come to be one of the best known franchises in the industry by tweaking the fine formula that has made the series known so well. These mechanics are the fantastic freedom to explore by running, climbing and now sailing. With Assassins Creed 4 Black Flag, sailing has become a key part of being a pirate and it is executed brilliantly with satisfying naval combat and exploration. It is easy to get the hang of the naval combat as it just requires your ship to be positioned correctly so you can fire your ordinance. Defeating enemy ships allow you to either board them for more loot as well as the option to repair your ship or add the ship to the terrible tacked on mini game of managing your very own fleet. On foot, things feel very familiar as the whole running, climbing plus the combat all are untouched with Edward just having some stylish new swordplay skills. Multiplayer is a fun distraction from the main game with a cat and mouse type stealth hunting mechanic mixed with Free-for-all and team based game modes which makes for tense matches.

The power of the next gen consoles boosts the visuals of Black Flag to a spectacular level. IT is one of the best looking games to date with the gorgeous tropical setting, fantastic water effects as well as jaw dropping weather effects. Then there is the story which has a slow narrative although Edward is a deeper protagonist this time around and is great fun to play as. The mission structure disappoints as well with tailing missions every 2 or 3 missions, it gets old fairly quickly.

Summary

You only have to play a few minutes of Assassins Creed 4 Black flag on next gen consoles to see that it’s by far the best looking titles this year with gorgeous foliage and weather effects. It boasts some tense naval combat that is deeply satisfying and its sprawling world is begging to be explored with side missions and collectables to keep you busy. Every gamer should adopt the pirates life.
