Game review: Battlefield 4

The Battlefield series returns with a big fat number 4 on the front as Dice and EA once again contend against the mighty Call of Duty. BF4 main selling point is its stellar multiplayer which has been remarkably improved thanks to the combination of the Frostbite 3 engine and the new “Levolution” mechanic which creates fully destructible environments and interchangeable maps caused by triggered events. These range from flooding the map to knocking down a 100 story skyscraper and dramatically change the pacing of the game causing players to take a different approach. Conquest, Rush, Death match and Team Death match all remain intact with new additions Obliteration (capture the flag style mode with a bomb) Diffuse (same as Obliteration only players only have one life) and Domination (variation of conquest only players can’t spawn at taken points). Each is awesome fun to play.

Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for the single player campaign. It’s short and dull clocking around 6 hours and the spectacular set pieces it offers are far and few between. Players control Sgt Daniel Recker and his squad who find themselves caught up in a war between the US and China. He isn’t afraid to break a few rules, not only for survival but in effort to tip the scale of the war. It’s not the next gen campaign we were to expect and it’s easy to see where the main focus was developing this game.

“Commander Mode” returns from BF2 which gives players control of their squad from an overhead perspective in an RTS gameplay style. It’s a nice change of scenery from the main gameplay and will attract the RTS fan boys but the interest won’t last long.

Battlefield 4 retains its top notch multiplayer with new weapons, modes, maps, vehicles and a spectacular fully destructible environment. The map changing events are superb to watch and even better to set off in motion. The single player however leaves a lot to be desired, dull, slow and short but the graphics are beautiful.
