The classic band born of the 50s skiffle age and 60s beat boom have been in business for 54 years now - and more than half a century of non-stop touring, to boot.

A more mature audience may have replaced the screaming girls but they’re as unstoppable as ever clocking up 200 plus show a year.

The impressive run of hits in the glory years continues to resonate is a reminder that a good song is always a good song, no matter who sings it, when, where - or why.

The material is memorable. Sweets for My Sweet, Sugar and Spice, Needles and Pins (or Pin-za!), When You Walk in the Room, Love Potion Number Nine, Take it or Leave It - although Bumble Bee may have passed some of us by.

They’re loved by royalty, headlined over Motown luminaries, toured Oz and New Zealand with The Rolling Stones (and aged rather better too) and strutted their stuff in front of 80k people at Wembley as special guests of Sir Cliff Richard.

Fans include Marky Ramone of the legendary punk pioneers The Ramones (who they allowed to sit in on drums for Needles and Pins), Springsteen, Petty, The Byrds, The Sweet and more.

Founded in the late 50s by guitarist John McNally and rightly regarded as national treasures they play the Marine Hall, Fleetwood, tomorrow, at 7pm, tickets £20. The band is made up of McNally, Frank Allen, Spencer James and Scott Ottaway, who will spice up all the hits with anecdotes.

For the record - they sold 50m of them - they still sport the look they made their own: high cut three button black suits, shirts and black ties.
