Oskar's Drum play at The Continental in Preston

Patrick Fitzgerald and Yves Altana - aka Oskar’s Drum - write and perform songs that are jagged, witty shards of angular pop.

They will be at The Continental on Friday March 17.

Patrick is best known for his work with seminal 90s band Kitchens of Distinction who released four albums on One Little Indian/A&M before splitting in 1996.

They reformed in 2013 for one final album.

Patrick has also written and performed as Fruit, Stephen Hero, Lost Girls with singer Heidi Berry and The April Seven.

Yves Altana is best known for his work with Manchester bands Wonky Alice, The Chrysalids and (with Mark Burgess) Invincible. He currently plays drums live for Chameleons Vox and is the producer and engineer behind Alchemized Music Production.

It was his interest in Patrick’s work that spurred the partnership.

Patrick said: “Yves got in touch with me via Facebook. He’d liked Kitchens in the day and was keen to try working on a new project.

“I went round to his house, heard a couple of tunes, and thought they were great. And so we made an album - A Cathedral of Hands last year and are half way through the second.”

During such a short space of time, they have curried success. Their first album - A Cathedral of Hands - was released on Ragoora Records in November last year and is available as a CD and Digital Download via Bandcamp.

It features ten new songs ranging from the elegiac Green-Veiled Mirror Ghost to the stomping Blackouts.

They are currently working on a follow-up which has no title yet.

Patrick is excited about his first tour with Oskar’s Drum and revisiting Preston.

He said: “You can expect a full airing of A Cathedral of Hands. Unfortunately there is no budget for the performing elephants as yet.

“I have been to Preston before, as I played there with Kitchens in 1991 on tour for Strange Free World. It was a great gig, with Liverpudlian band Kit supporting.”

Oskar’s Drum will be at The Continental, in South Meadow Lane, on Friday March 17, with Drahla and Mick Shepherd (ex Big Red Bus) supporting. Doors open 8pm.
