A lover of all food especially when it comes to Chinese, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to trying out this new oriental eatery.
My latest eating quest took me to the recently opened Phoenix Restaurant, which is tucked away on Hallgate between an Indian takeaway and the pharmacy in Astley Village.
And I have got to say it impressed right from the start and continued to do so well into the next day.
Greeted by a calm atmosphere when you walk in, we had a number of choices of were we could sit and opted for a table towards the back.
Something I have never seen before in a restaurant was the lay-out.
Not packed with tables, the owners have opted to seat customers on decking surrounded by authentic Chinese lights and paintings – and how they have hit the nail on the head.
Being on the decking, it feels like you have your own space just out the loop from everybody else but still having the chance to take in the restaurant atmosphere.
After being seated and browsing both the drinks and food menus, we both opted for a bottle of Tsingtao to start with.
The food menu had plenty of choice with a large number of dishes making it hard to choose what to select.
After much deliberation, for starters we had salt and pepper ribs and a portion of prawn toast.
After a short wait, the food was brought over and we were greeted with a lovely aroma which made you want to instantly tuck in.
The ribs were excellent, packed with flavour and not over cooked with the added bonus of a larger portion.
I’ve had ribs before but these are easily up there with some of the best I’ve had.
They were not overcooked and the salt and pepper spice made each rib just ooze flavour and left you wanting more each time.
The prawn toast was much the same, not overcooked and had just the right amount of filling.
After two delicious starters ,our mains saw us have special curry, crispy chicken in a garlic and chilli sauce along with egg fried rice and salt and pepper chips.
Oh, and there was also a bottle of white wine to help wash it down.
The curry was excellent, packed with chicken, beef and pork layered with a thick sauce which had a kick but definitely not too spicy.
The chunks of meat were an ample size and I would be happy ordering the dish again.
Kerri’s crispy chicken again was excellent with a huge portion size the chicken was covered in a lovely sauce which didn’t dominate giving a blend of flavours.
The salt and pepper chips are already the talk of the village and you can see why – fresh out the wok and packed with flavour again, the spice didn’t dominate and each chip had a unique taste.
Each dish came on unique Chinese plates which I particularly liked.
It was a wonderful meal and definitely a place I would recommend. It has something for everyone and I just couldn’t fault it.
The bill came to £52.60.
