Police supremo Clive Grunshaw has revealed he has repaid almost £800 in over-claimed expenses following a second embarrassing cash blunder as crime commissioner.

But the former milkman has insisted the error was down to a member of his staff, not him. The revelation comes less than six months after Mr Grunshaw was exonerated of accusations he fiddled £1,550 of allowances as a county councillor.

This time he admitted his office had claimed £796.70 too much in mileage expenses for his work as commissioner - they were claiming 45p a mile when he was only entitled to charge between 12p and 13p. He said: “As soon as this was brought to my attention I immediately repaid the money.

“My role is a busy one and I have to be able to rely on the mechanisms put in place for payments to ensure that, once I have signed my expenses to confirm their accuracy, they are processed correctly.”
